Subtle and silent, the energetic turtle spends a night in the cove

An up and down day. Mostly up. Recitation and laboratory were drawn out and very boring; I'm putting off the lab report and fourth assignment until the weekend.

I received some free address labels from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) in the mail today. While I don't donate funds to that particular organization, I'll definitely use the labels. I already donate $5 and $10 on a semi-annual basis to several organizations: Planned Parenthood, Humane Society of Southern Arizona (and the national org, too), and the Nature Conservancy. What I'd really like to do is start subscribing to the National Association for Literature and the Environment, so I can submit articles or essays for publication. That would be one way to get me on the professional map.

I went to visit Grandma Elena on the east side of town; she fell earlier this week and has bruises and scrapes all over her body. She also broke her wrist :( What was truly scary was that she had been taking old morphine (circa 1999; she kept all of Tati's medicine after he passed away) for the pain and essentially overdosed, forcing an emergency room visit. My mother was there with her for almost 24 hours straight. I would have gone, but she told me to stay at home. Luckily, all the morphine is out of her system, and she is just trying to rest and not be uncomfortable with her full arm cast (just for a broken wrist?).

I'm spending the evening writing letters to friends, and reading more of Sideways since I haven't enough funds to purchase the yarn for the Fraggle Rock hats I want to make (thus, no knitting). Speaking of lack of funds, I have a lot of upcoming expenses: UA parking permit, gas for my car, phone bill, and other weekly tangibles. I wish I could work more hours at ASDB, but it's just not feasible with summer school, and there's not enough to do there to justify me working more hours. I might have to pick up a weekend job. If any of you know of any places that are hiring strictly weekend workers, please leave a comment.

No exercise today, and I'm kicking myself. I could have easily made the time to go, but I napped instead. Rats. I'll get back on the horse tomorrow.

I really dislike people who equate pro-choice with pro-abortion. You wouldn't happen to be one of those individuals, now would you? Funny you should have an extended opinion, as you're male, and would not be the recipient of reproductive rights that are fighting to be protected by PP.

And how is pro-choice NOT pro-abortion. When you say you have the choice, it's whether to kill the child or let it live. And pro-choice takes the stand of killing it. gg nab.

Actually, there is this rather lengthy article in Glamour magazine (August's issue to those interested) talking about this very same issue. Most people nowadays are pro-life. It doesn't occur to us that our mothers and grandmothers fought so hard to get us women the right to chose. Back before Roe v. Wade, there were a lot of back-door abortions. Many women had shotty "doctors" doing the procedure which lead to reproductive complications and in some cases even death.
Granted there are many more options to abortion (adoption, keeping it for the father to raise) but most people are more likely to take the morning after pill. Isn't that abortion in a sense? Taking emergency contraception to avoid having to get an abortion or suffer through child birth?
What our generation doesn't seem to understand is that abortion is a right we were born with. We didn't have to take to the streets in protest about what to do with our bodies.

Abortion is a necessary evil.. who wants to walk around for 9 months with a constant reminder that they were raped? Or what about if a woman has to chose between her life and the life of her unborn child? A man could never make that choise. It's not his life that is in danger. Nor is it his body that has to carry that child.

Here's a simple stance on abortion that I have learned to take. If you don't like it, don't have it done. But don't judge someone who's had one. You have no idea what it's like to walk in their shoes.

What would you rather do? Have more of your hard earned money go to pay for another child on welfare or let that girl who's pregnant and very unsure of her future decide whether or not she wants to bring a child into this fucked up society. It really doesn't matter.. it's not YOUR choise.. it's hers.

Not just that, but donating money to Planned Parenthood doesn't mean that you're donating solely to a baby-killing organization. They also give out birth control, do free testing and give out services to those who can't afford health insurance.

abortion isn't a "right" at all. It's murder. In addition my hard earned money already goes to them, so whats the point? And if you put it that way, hows abotu I get to choose where my taxes go? ANd yes, planned parenthood is a baby-killing orginization.

You still on for tonight? I can give you the sunshade and I have a box of acrylic yarn that my dad picked up at a yard sale that I keep meaning to give you and Sarah. Except I am confiscating a few skeins from it. Apperently, Bri has been stealing MoMo's shawl, so I need to make her one of her own so she'll leave her sister alone. Ah kids. I should be flattered. I'll tell you the complete story when I see you, it's funny.
I'll call you when I get home from school, and we can all figure out the plan for tonight. So far, it appears to be me, you, Sarah, Lisa, and maybe Gabby. And anyone else who comes.

I'm a vegetarian and even I'm not much of a fan for PETA. For one, they make vegetarians look bad for being overly radical. I agree with what they're saying, but the way they say it is yucky.

Furthermore, they preach some things even I don't agree with. Like no zoos and no pets or any sort of domestication of animals (even seeing dogs for blind people.) So yeah =P

Always good to know about the organization before you support them ^^;

I hear what you're saying. I don't financially support PETA, but I suppose if I use the address labels (some say PETA, others just feature pictures of healthy animals, and the latter are the ones I want to use), then it could be construed that I do.
